Letter from the program director

Our cardiovascular fellowship at the Zucker School of Medicine at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center provides a training program like no other. The Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital at North Shore University Hospital is a quaternary care center and together with Long Island Jewish Medical Center, a tertiary care center, provides high volume in an environment with broad training opportunities that include a population of diverse ethnic groups and socioeconomic strata. Patients originate from eastern Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau and Suffolk counties.

The program assures exposure to all clinical and procedural areas of cardiology through integrated rotations in inpatient and outpatient settings, along with intensive training in the procedural aspects of cardiac care beginning with simulator training. The rotations allow for progressive growth and expansion of skills to culminate in the ability to provide care to the cardiac patient without supervision. Through the guidance and supervision of a dedicated faculty—many of whom are internationally known—the fellows can achieve their individual goals.

Advanced hemodynamic support, cardiac transplant, high risk ablations and PCI help prepare fellows for all aspects of cardiology. The program has unique exposure to many subspecialties of cardiology including vascular cardiology, cardio-oncology, cardio-obstetrics, preventive cardiology, adult congenital heart disease, cardio-genetics, CTU rotation, structural heart rotation, lipid clinic, cardiac rehabilitation and ambulatory practices of different designs.

Educational opportunities are vast with faculty dedicated to clinical and basic science research. Mentoring is essential to fellows’ success. Fellows are widely published and present in all major national scientific sessions. They also have educational opportunities in mentoring medical students, residents, allied health professionals and their co-fellows.

Please do not hesitate to reach out for more information.

Sincerely,
Donna Marchant, MD, FACC
